Wednesday is Hanging Day (of the quilts, I mean)
This is the day we go home exhausted, but smiling. Between 9:00am and noon entrants arrive to check in their quilts (or gallery entries).
Renorise Krause is the chairperson of quilt take-in and it runs like a well-oiled machine. The check-in table is divided alphabetically and once the owner has their receipt, a copy of it is pinned on the back of the quilt. Now it is handed off to a ‘runner’ who finds the quilts special space and hangs it on the bar of where it needs to be hung.
The Frame crew, led by Bruce Greenfield, climb on ladders and get them hung. Every year there is a quilt ‘shuffle’ that needs to be done and this year was no exception. “A few frames repositioned and 14 quilts moved – not too bad”, is what he told me.
Somehow the number of drapes put out for the quilts were not enough, and more had to be ironed. So… it was more of the same for me and a couple other gals. Why the drapes at all? To cover any open air spots and to hide the frames.
But wait – there’s MORE!
After all the quilts are hung, we place description cards and participant ribbons on each entry. It takes us a while to do this because we get distracted by the quilts themselves. Meanwhile… The props people are hauling in cool things to place by quilts that have the same theme going on. They have cute to vintage items. Then the fresh flowers are arranged and strategically placed. Now – we have a show.
When I walked into the large room on Thursday, everything was magnificent (as always!) It always takes my breath away to see it all put together. Like I had not seen all the preparation. It just needed one more prop – a large brown bear. Thank you to Chloe Baer for letting us borrow him.
